In a best of three game series, the Minnesota Lynx defeated the San Antonio Stars at the Target Center on Tuesday night. The Silver Stars took a surprising early 12-4 lead, when Coach Reeve had seen enough.-That's when she decided to open up a can of whup-ass, in the 6 ft 2 inch personas of Rebekkah Brunson and Taj McWilliams-Franklin. The ladies, Brunson and McWilliams-Franklin, served notice and proceeded to kick....Stars. It was Taj McWilliams-Franklin that bought the Lynx back to life with a soft handed 16 foot jump shot that jump-fired up the 8700 plus audience and started the Lynx offensive engine.
McWilliams-Franklin and Brunson scored the Lynx' first 12 points and made a defensive statement worthy of a highlight film on the "ESPN top 10 list".
Playing hard nosed defense, McWilliams-Franklin took a hard shot to the face and went down like a sack of bricks. After a long agonizing pause, McWilliams-Franklin was helped to her feet by her teammates-the pain was obvious, and all thought she would have to come out of the game. Well, you thought wrong- McWilliams-Franklin still in obvious pain and out of focus, continued, slammed two free throws, spit out the blood, and got back in the saddle. I guess the sista doesn’t know the word QUIT-cause she didn't-nor did her team, who rallied around to protect her. McWilliams-Franklin didn't need protection 'cause she was mad-it was the Stars that now needed protection.
McWilliams-Franklin caused the Stars frustration and turnovers that pressured them out of their individual games and destroyed the Stars offensive rhythm.
Brunson was also on a defensive tear, attacking the post players and relentless contesting loose balls. Aggressive in her use of space by fighting through traffic to get positioned to receive the ball for clear shots. It wasn't just the scoring, it was Brunson's attitude; her body language told a story that the Stars could not decipher, and most certainly could not stop.
The proof of the hustle was in the number of rebounds-after the first three quarters the Lynx out rebounded the Stars by 25-15. The stats kept getting better, as the hunger for victory satiated itself. Jessica Adaire bumped seven points and played some good "D" in the 16 minutes she was allowed. Monica Wright got 5 points in slightly less than 10 minutes of play.
Lindsay Whalen played almost 30 minutes and scored 4 points. One might draw a conclusion that Whalen didn't have a very good game-quite the contrary-she had a wonderful game. Whalen is not only gifted as a scorer, but she directs traffic and runs the floor better than anybody else in the WNBA. That is not to say she sat back and cooled in the shade-her defense was sterling and her effort was nothing short of MVP. No matter how you cut it, where you're from, or what style of basketball you play, Whalen is a bad....
Let us not forget Seimone Augustus who just happened to be the game's high scorer.
To quote Coach Reeve in describing Augustus' performance- "What can I say about Seimone tonight-she's just a stud!!"
In coach parlance that bespeaks an athlete or performance for which there are no words-pretty high praise from one's coach.
When her team needed a spark, they looked to Augustus. When a score was needed for a declarative mark of separation, there was Seimone. And the crushing scores that closed the door on San Antonio's play off dreams came from Augustus. Every time the Stars thought of asserting themselves in the paint, or shots-here all come Seimone-with herself, and her game high 22 points!! Augustus closed the door and turned out the lights on the Stars. Final score85-67
When leaving the post game interview this reporter happen to see assistant coach Shelley Patterson and offer congratulations- with no hesitation, or pre-thought, Patterson shot back, in a matter of fact tone that indicated all business, all the time-
"Thanks, but we're not finished yet"
That 'bout summed it up-the Lynx are happy and appreciative for the victories past-but they're not finished yet!!
The incredibly exciting road to the finals continue, and you should come along-go to see the Lynx in person at the Target Center-the excitement is infectious.
