Les Nubians entered the music scene in 1998 giving the world it’s first taste of neo soul; hip hop and jazz melodies combined with french poetic lyrics. The duo composed Hélène and Célia Faussart from Paris, France took the world by storm with their Grammy nominated single Makeda in 1998. Since then, the duo has been collaborating with some of the best in the industry such as, Black Eyed Eyes and Talib Kweli. Les Nubians are now back with a new album Nu Revolution! The duo is on tour blessing their fans with their new sound. Litt Magazine caught up with Les Nubians to discuss their new album and more.
Litt:
Les Nubians hit the music scene hard with Makeda, and was the beginning of what we call neo-soul music today. How does it feel to be a part of the inception of a genre of music?
Les Nubians:
When Makada released in 1998 we were trying to impact the French culture we wanted to share with the world our ID and our music. It was very important for us to impact our French culture at the time. We were singing hip hop with very sweet melodies and still being conscience, that was the topic of Makada. I think the neo soul movement came from the will to still be children of the hip hop generation. Since We had so much in our background we ended up creating something that never existed before.
Litt:
Do you think the music industry has changed since your last album?
Les Nubians:
Yes, some people are saying we are selling more music and some are saying weare selling less, but the paradox is, we never had the chance to have access to so many different types of music through the internet and there are artists we would not have normally heard, are now being heard by record labels. The internet is changing the rules of the music game.
Litt:
Being that you are multicultural, do you feel music is universal?
Les Nubians:
Yes! Yes! I think people are even more curious even more ready to embrace different things. I feel like in America people are trying to look at what is happening in other parts of the world. I was always amazed when we traveled to Africa and would go to villages in Cameroon; places where only people who live there normally go and there would be Americans there. Americans are not afraid to explore. Now the message about Americans being universal citizens is becoming true.
Litt:
You have worked with Talib Kweli and Black Eyed Peas are there any other artist that you would like to work with?
Les Nubians:
Yes there are many of them. The biggest one is Quincy Jones. I have huge dreams to work with him. There are so many artists that we love to collaborate with like Mary, Erika, of course Stevie Wonder, India Irie.
Litt:
When you listen to music who do you listen to?
Les Nubians:
I am very eclectic I can listen to Jazz, French tones, and Reggae. I listen to very different music. The music I listen to the most lately is an album by a French Rapper. We worked together and on an album and he just dropped a new album and I love it.
Litt:
Tell me about your new album?
Les Nubians
Wow it took two years to put it together because we produced it our selves. It is a full independent record and it is a good thing because we had total artistic freedom and we could definitely work with a producer that we loved and we are very very proud of the album. This album we would never have to be ashamed of and we are so proud of that. It was a lot of sweat, work, a lot of prayers and a lot of faith that we put in it. We named it because Nu Revolution because I think it is definitely time for a revolution, no more time for talking, it is time for action. This album is a little more up tempo than the other albums and with action we also want to celebrate and we need to rejoice. We need to know that we can go forward in life. This is what we want to put in the album and we hope the audience will feel it.
Litt:
What do you have in store for Minneapolis on Oct. 6th?
Les Nubians:
We will be performing songs from the new album and we will be doing a pre release of an exclusive cd which will only be available at the show.
Litt:
Any parting words for the readers?
Les Nubians:
We are very happy to be back on the road and go to all the venues with our new music. We would like to say “Thank You.” I want to thank all of our audiences. The 1st album was released in 1998, we did our 1st tour in 1999, and we met our audience on that tour and it was amazing. We did many performances and released our second album in 2003 and that was seven years ago and then we were still performing throughout the country and so we have to thank our audiences and Les Nubians fans and supporters who were there all that that time. It’s been 12 years and we are still getting messages and emails though the internet. I hope the new album, the music, the melodies will be the most beautiful gift to them and we have to thank them for their support of us all these years so, Thank You!
