The Givens Foundation for African-American Literature
Did you know that the last fall marked the launch of the Givens Black Books campaign. We at LittMagazine feel that the importance of the preservation of Black period literature and intelligentsia, while largely unheralded, is of equal value, as the most sacred missions of the civil rights movement;that of "passing on" to future generations the literature of sacrifice, wisdom, beauty, and history of Black Intellect.
The officers at the Givens Foundation challenged themselves to the monumental mission of increasing access and engagement in the literary arts in the Twin Cities African-American community.
The reading campaign will feature a series of public book discussions at local libraries and community centers, that will be covered by Litt magazine to assist the Givens Foundation in getting the word out. Let us, as a community, attend these book discussions-not only because they are informative, but they are extremely stimulating; as witnessed by the (October 25th) Black Book Club's discussion of Toni Morrison's book "Jazz", hosted by Arleta Little with very special guests Jawole Jo Willar Zollar, founding director of Urban Bush Women, and University of Minnesota department head, Afo-American Literature, sociologist, and historian, Dr. Jonathan Wright.
This is a community reading campaign designed to engage the African-American community, but all people are invited and encouraged to participate. The Givens family believes strongly in total community inclusion.
For more than 20 years, the Givens Foundation for African-American Literature has been the only organization in the Twin Cities exclusively dedicated to advancing and celebrating black literature and writers. The Givens Foundation's literary arts education programs, African-American author series, and writers retreats enrich the quality of education, cultivate literary minds, and promote the crafting of excellence in African-American literature.
In case you weren't aware, the Givens Foundation has the largest Black genre collection of novel and interpretive literature of any in the world. That collection began and sustained by Archie Givens Sr., was so far ahead of its time, that we're just beginning to catch up. The collection is a valuable jewel that Givens Sr. knew would be a source of pride and resource for generations to come; With foresight, and old Black style deliberation, Archie Givens Sr. set out to protect those valuable works that could have easily fallen into obscurity and disappeared forever.
We all owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Givens but we of Litt magazine specifically want to acknowledge the late Mr. Archie Givens Sr. for his committment to our future growth and intellectual developement. A tip of the hat, and a sincere salute to Mr. Archie Givens Sr. and to the present day Givens Foundation for African-American Literature-a true Local Legend.
