LITT
So how was the group formed?
Jay
We have been playing together since we were18 went through some change about two years ago. We brought in a new drummer through some friends in Toronto and he been playing with us since the Olympics
LITT
How did you come up with the name Bedouin Soundclash?
Jay
We didn’t when growing up in Vancouver there was I song I loved called Bedouin Soundclash. I remembering mail ordering it, it took a long time to get but it was my prize possession. Then when we started playing and I thought we sounded like that song and it stuck with us .
LITT
You guys have a very unique eclectic sound you here a lot of different tones, melodies, and music styles such as rock, R&B, and reggae. How would you describe your music?
Jay
I would explain our music as they are all folk songs then we find rhythms for them reggae has always been a common thread throughout our career mainly because that is how we all come together whether it be rock or punk music. It’s folk with a very heavy rhythm section!
LITT
What is unique about the members of the group?
Jay
All three of us are distinct personalities that come across in the way that we play. I don’t know anyone who plays bass like Eon and I definitely don’t know anyone who plays drums like Sekou. That’s what’s makes it inspiring With Eon he is always coming up with something new. That is very inspiring.
LITT
Tell me about your new album?
Jay
I wrote all of the songs on the album. We went to Phil to work with King Brit. King is well know for his techno and house and this was the first time he had recorded with an actual band. The first time recording with Eon and I recorded with Sekou and we did it without tracking and we did it live. It was a really free environment and it made us inspired and being in Philadelphia which has a rich history in music.
In terms of the music we are a lot more comfortable with ourselves. It is a darker themed album than what we have done in the past but more introspective.
LITT
What is your favorite song on the album?
Jay
Brutal Heart, I think it is a special song because it was the first time I worked with Beatrice Martin and I enjoyed sing with her it was the beginning of us working with her.
LITT
How is life on the road?
Jay
We are doing a lot of promo shows we just came from London, Paris and now we are on the east coast, it kind of cool because it is not exactly like a tour we are not spending months on end in a tour bus.
LITT
So what can we expect at the show in the Twin Cities?
Jay
Our last shows have been more punk rock, it is a positive show and we try to create an atmosphere of posivity and hope.
